5 reasons why you should consider a first look
Many couples today are opting for a “first look” on their wedding day, and chances are as you plan your wedding, your wedding professionals are going to want to know if you will to. First things first, do you know what a first look is?
A first look is a moment on the wedding day when a couple chooses to see one another before the formal ceremony. It’s usually a time that’s filled with laughter and tears.
To see one another before the ceremony has historically been considered bad luck, specifically for the groom to see the bride. Did you know that this superstition emerged from the era of arranged marriages? The groom was typically prevented from seeing the bride so that he could not reject a bride based on how she looked. I’m a bit appalled that I know this now!
However as times have changed and the celebration of marital love has become more inclusive, this tradition is going by the wayside (Hooray!) Should you consider a first look? I think so and here’s why
You get the jitters out
Even for the most casual of couples, right before you wed - you are a bundle of nerves. Having a first look often serves as a release of sorts with the one you love the most. You get to be yourself with each other without everyone staring at you. If you want to cry, you cry. If you're going to laugh, you laugh. And trust me, there's nothing that could dull the burst of exhilaration you'll feel when you look at each other from each end of the aisle when you make your way there.
2. Time to appreciate one another in all your finery
Right after you see each other, you get to see each other looking your very best. I mean, this is what it’s all about right? You get to admire the gown, the suit, the kilt, or even toga that your beloved has chosen to wear for you.
3. Unhurried time for formal portraits
Usually formal portraits the couple has for themselves and their family members occurs during cocktail hour. This is when your photographer wrangles you away from your guests, gathers up your family and heads to a great location for formal portraits. This is cocktail hour and a lot
4. Portraits while you’re mint
What I mean is, first looks usually occur after everyone is dressed, makeup and hair done and you’re dressed for your wedding. Right after the first look, you have the opportunity to make portraits while you’re looking your best.
5. More time with your friends
With formal portraits done, you have a chance to spend time with your friends and family during cocktail hour. Many couples have lots of friends and family who travel from near and far, and very often who’ve not been seen in a while. Having a first look allows you to spend more time with the people who’ve come to celebrate with you.
So let me know if you’re considering having a first look on your wedding day. I’ll be glad to talk things through with you.
Cheers!
